designer's own words:

When using a hotplate for dining have you ever noticed that in the back of your mind there is always a caution when to not burn yourself when having a meal? The conventional hotplate is essentially a slab of exposed steel which is hot, which means it deters the user from fully enjoying the experience of a good meal. The concept of the hotplate is for the user to have a sizzling meal with a piece of mind and no need of minding where his/her hands is when having their meal. The hotplate uses the same slab of steel but it is then put in a wood base and lid so there is no exposed hot steel. Now the user can enjoy their sizzling meals with total piece of mind and truly immerse oneself into enjoying their food.
