designer's own words:

The Light-room is a conceptual design for an interior consisting of light-weight furniture. All pieces are designed with no other goal than creating products as light as possible. Lightness had a lot of advantages, for example reducing energy consumption during production and transport. And of course it minimizes the amount of materials used in these products. The pieces of furniture in this room all together weigh about 7,5 kg. Each individual product in the room has been developed as far as models and prototypes. They are ready to be translated into real products. The image shown is taken of a set of (1:6) scale-models ---------------------------------------------------------------A brief description of each product: Dyneema Chair >> This chair was based on the fact that textiles can be very effective when dealing with tensile forces since the forces can be uniformly dispersed over the whole fabric . A whole chair can be made out one strong textile, (1,5 kg) Soap-film Table >> The shape of this table imitates the physics of a soap-film. Knitted silk is used for the body of this table. The table-top is constructed of two layers of silk-composite with a kevlar-honeycomb in between, to create a strong an lightweight structure. (2,0 kg) Gridshelf >> In the Gridshelf, deformations are counteracted by a diagonal grid of cables. Which in this case dramatically reduces the amount of materials used for constructing a shelf. (600 gr.) SlS-Chair >> In this chair 3D printing techniques are used to manufacture a complex lightweight structure. The material is glass-filled nylon. (2,5 kg) Gaudi Stool >> With a top surface made of a Dyneema-composite, which proves to be even stronger then carbonfiber. (900 gr.) -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This conceptual interior shows a technical way of solving problems, which sometimes (certainly not always) can be a good option, as long as technology is based on logical concepts. We that the Light-room addresses attention to the subject of lightness since it's underestimated as a sustainable solution. The project shows that minimizing use of energy and materials doesn't necessarily means minimizing shape and aesthetics.
