designer's own words:

Smart Smiley (Swim training aid device) Swimming is all about timing and most difficult part is breathing. The biggest barrier to learn swimming is fear of swallowing water or breathing under water. Mini oxygen masks and snorkels just do not let people to learn how to swim and breathe in water. How Smart Smiley works? There are 18 holes located in 8 rows on the front side of the smile shape device, which their position (open/Close) controlled by a central simple controller unit (Micro controller). Front side covered with water repellent nano material or Teflon to let water roll easily of the surface. 22 Infrared or ultra sound sensors provide data which should be processed by Micro controller about presence of water in front of each sensor. Every holes row located between two sensor rows. If any sensor in each of these two rows fails to confirm that sensor is out of water, that row’s holes will be closed immediately. Sensors could sense water from 1 Centimeter distance, so Micro controller has enough time to respond and close the holes using coil jacks. Holes diameter is 12 mm, so just a single hole is enough for breathing. Wide front area increases the chance of access to air with much less head rotation and lack of prefect timing. This device helps people specially beginners to swim and master they timing and swimming skill without fear of swallowing water or inhale water.
