designer's own words:

The Solar Beacon is a groundbreaking entrant into the dormant portable outdoor lighting (lantern) category. Finally, outdoor lighting will be more than ‘sturdy’; The Solar Beacon adds immediate value over existing options with unprecedented ‘next generation’ (LED) functionality. It is substantially more efficient, safe, user-friendly and eco-friendly/sustainable than any existing category option. The Solar Beacon’s unprecedented functionality will extend its appeal beyond recreational outdoorsmen, to disaster victims, emergency-prepared consumers and eco-sensitive property owners with outdoor spaces to light. The key features of the Solar Beacon (LED, solar rechargeable battery pack, touch-sensitive sensors, ergonomic design, non glaring illumination) were enabled by advances in LED, laptop display and flexible solar panel technologies. The Beacon’s durable, hermetic construction allows for high impact usage scenarios (natural disasters, construction sites, outdoor excursions, etc.). The Solar Beacon will provide light in the darkest moments… even in natural disasters, it will illuminate when other power or fuel cell sources are non-functional or unsafe, making it an invaluable resource in rescue efforts and an essential addition to any home emergency or expedition kit. In terms of usability, the touch-sensitive cylinder of the Beacon intuitively allows for dimming of the lightsource, for changes in mood or greater battery life. For re-charge, the core of the Beacon simply pulls out and unfurls into a solar-rechargeable panel attached to the main LED power source, a (lightweight) battery unit. The Beacon’s breakthrough design uses the latest laptop display technology to enable the diffusion of the otherwise glaring and unattractive LED core, allowing the Beacon to keep shining with a friendly … smooth … soothing illumination.
