designer's own words:

Originally developed for a Japanese restaurant with a single shared table spanning the length of the establishment, symbiosis™ encourages an intimate dining experience.___ Inspired by the Japanese way of thinking that looks upon a piece of ceramic without food as unfinished, the dishes have been designed to form a stage whilst placing significance on the interaction of consumption. This philosophy, coupled with the principles of M.C. Escher’s early works (particularly his sketches, tessellating tiles and specifically ‘Metamorphosis’) motivated several explorations in varied media, before being refined into the interlocking forms of symbiosis™.___ The shape of a bird’s outstretched wings inspired the profile of the dishes, creating sufficient space for the user to hold and lift the pieces. This theme is further demonstrated by the significant overhangs on each side of the work, creating a visual sense of space.___ Formed from either slip cast stoneware or hydraulic pressed porcelain, a clear finish has been applied to the material in order to display its natural purity, while also ensuring durability for continued use.
