british designers D*haus have launched their two flagship products, the D*table and D*dynamic on kickstarter. a first in the world of architecture, the D*haus was inspired by the “haberdashers formula”, discovered by the mathematician henry ernest dudeney in 1903. he worked out how to turn a perfect square into an equilateral triangle by dissecting the square into four distinct shapes. applying this formula to architecture creates a house that can be transformed from a square into a triangle, with a multitude of combinations in between. see designboom’s earlier coverage on the previous phase here.

the D*table applies the same mathematical formula to furniture design. as with the house prototype, the D*table is comprised of four polygonal shapes that can be moved individually or in conjunction with one another. the flexible design means that D*table can be adapted to compliment any living space, while the clean lines make it a stylish addition to any home. each of the four pieces can function as stand alone pieces or in conjunction as exhibited with the house. each component features its own unique characteristics for storing or displaying objects, with various forms suited for different spaces and purposes. a custom hinge system is designed to slide into place, connecting the four parts into one larger table that retains the ability to be transformed into the various configurations.

the ultimate goal is to build the world’s first dynamic house but their initial aim is to launch the new version of the D*table into shops. the campaign, which will last for 42 days, will be the first opportunity to order the D*table. if you would like to take part, be sure to visit their kickstarter page.

the D*dynamic house was originally conceived as a living solution for people in the arctic circle. the dynamic design meant it could be adapted to suit the changing environment – the ‘closed’ square shape offered insulation to protect and heat the inhabitants during the harsh, dark winters, while the ‘open’ triangular shape enabled them to enjoy the long hours of sunshine in summer.
