british designer karen ryan has used old and imperfect discarded plates and vases since 2000. her ‘unmade 07’ vases in 2007 were about what is the product of design, ryan created the brand ‘unmade 07’ and then literally umade the unwanted vases she collected. in this latest collection ‘second hand’ vases 2011 the domestic camouflage explored in the ‘second hand’ plates series is taken further on, into the decorative. the reused functional vases still maintain her subversion of the everyday whilst betraying the notion and aesthetics of decoration.
