‘kill your darlings’ by jeroen van loon

‘kill your darlings’ by digital media artist jeroen van loon shows the transformation of teenagers as ‘beautiful little darlings’ into ‘cruel little devils’. the installation shows how digital culture has changed how we think about privacy, bullying and the use of real-time media. while the internet has given everybody their own channel to broadcast information to the whole world, twitter has amplified the distribution of thoughts, opinions and in a bigger context, social relationships, freely available for everyone to enjoy.

using small LCD-keychains shaped in the form of a heart, the project shows us the inside ‘private’ social circles of young teenage girls, contrasting a perfectly crafted profile photo with a follow up of one of their most hateful tweets used to publicly insult, offend and abuse; completely shattering her own ‘perfect’ image.
