‘object desk’ by kit craig for the sculpture house

the dark sapele shapes embedded in the surface of this desk are like x-ray shadows of everyday objects: a coffee cup, a ruler, and envelope – each one seemingly extruded through the surface down into the legs. through clever engineering, london-based designer kit craig introduces a concealed aluminium substructure in ‘object desk’ for the sculpture house – bringing rigidity to the removable legs before being topped with a hand-cast, resin-bound calcium carbonate writing surface.

the incorporation of natural chalk into the tough resin is both functional and highly attractive, providing the ideal counterpoint to the dark warmth of the solid sapele hardwood. the planked, planed and turned legs are undeniably pleasing, but there is also an understated mathematical logic at play: each of the eight ‘objects’ has one ‘side’ more than the last.
