design for seniors / design for all
http://www.kabk.nl

although the elderly are an increasingly large group
of people, their special needs and wishes seem
almost forgotten in today’s society.
with this in mind postgraduates of rca the hague here
showed designs which can be used by everybody.

‘whispering cushion’ by endry van zwam has a wireless speaker in it that can be connected to radio, tv... to any soundsource you desire.

‘I’ll just make you some tea...’ the ‘flying tray’ by kees claasen facilitates dignity in allowing the elderly to continue to show hospitality in their own home.

a tote bag with a removable shell to be used as a cushioned mat
- by natasja heesbeen.

rebellious, rather than ‘nice’,‘soft’ or ‘safe’ design was r
obert vd crommenacker’s approach.

named ‘protest’, these designs are stripped of their medical associations,
ridding their users of the pitifulness that needing to use an IV drip,
walking stick or frame, wheelchair seems to invoke.

still from a short movie showing betty and ‘protest’ out on the street.

biegel: furniture design meets fine jewellery
‘what do you get if you cross a furniture
designer with the realm of jewellery?’
the fellow designer and jewellery company owner
marc-jens biegel has wondered and asked.

some answers in gold and platinum
were on show here.

zeeloo by alfred Haberli - ring, bracelet, earring and necklace designs.

spike design by tom dixon - wrist and neck adornments.

upstairs from the biegel exhibition, the german jeweller, carl dau
renown for his pioneering use of non-precious
materials such as steel and titanium,
invited viewers to touch and examine his works
by doing without the barrier of a glass casing.

evergreen
http://www.plantfactory.de

this exhibition of glowing bottled lifeforms
gave the sensation of being in a mad-scientist’s lair.

locked into an airtight (marmalade) jar,
with some kind of agar-type jelly,
a plant can survive for about a year.
when the seedling outgrows it shell,
simply smash the bottle and plant
it elsewhere.

Not requiring watering, or even much light
evergreen would be ideal for those who travel
often or who simply lack a green-thumb!

freshform
http://www.freshform.de

does colour affect moods?
it could be quickly put to the test using
jonas togler’s debut lighting system
- ‘the accomplices’.

a single bulb stands on a white metal plaque.
various lighting effects are achieved by
coloured films arranged over the bulb,
held in place by magnetic buttons.

interactive - instant customisation-
these lamps inflame the experimentative impulse.

anonymous creations remaining after last night’s launch party.

designer jonas togler demonstrates the concept.

red and raring to go!

the bee’s knees!
