BLUEPRINT / 100% Design Awards 2001
after a very lively judging session and much debate
between our esteemed panel members
selfridges plcs chief executive vittorio radice,
design museum director alice rawsthorn and furniture
designer michael marriott
the winners of this years blueprint / 100% design awards
were announced on friday 28 september 2001.
there are two awards, designed to recognise and reward
the work both of an individual designer and of a manufacturer
committed to making to the highest quality and design values.
this year, as blueprint editor in chief aidan walker pointed out,
the normal roles were somewhat reversed; the designers
award goes to a senior designer
cutler and craftsman david mellor
and the manufacturers award goes to a young company in the
form of twentytwentyone, started only a few years ago by simon
alderson, whose products included three new seating systems by
designers robin day, william plunkett and michael young.
the difference in attitude and approach of the judges was
very marked, and made for heated discussion during the
judging process, explains walker.
there was considerable debate about what exactly is and
is not good design, and this made for a difficult judging
session but an extremely good debate.
fortunately there was absolute unanimity when it came to
david mellors new kitchen knives, which show beauty, utility,
grace, form and function in a fine craft tradition, and when the
judges considered the achievement of twentytwentyone,
which with its determination to keep the classics of
international design in production has made a very high
reputation for itself in a short time.
