installations for designboom
--
‘cloud’, 2004
a cloud with the sun behind / or illuminated smoke -
is kazuhiro’s most recent light project.
designed especially for the designboom stand with the
‘100%tiles’ exhibition at 100% design in london,
september 2004.
the ‘cloud-fibre’ around the light bulb is made of
DuPont ™ Nomex®, a fiber with an extraordinary combination
of high-performance heat- and flame-resistant properties,
as well as superior textile characteristics.

(many thanks to the great collaboration by DuPont,
designboom’s hi -tech partner. )
a 150 W standard light was used for one unit to make it
bright enough to light the various tile projects up.

‘no journey‘s end’, 2003
is another lighting installation designed especially for
designboom. it has been shown in our exhibition
‘100% folding chairs’ during the ‘100% design’ in london,
september 2003.
the light bulb is illuminated by a halogen light, which is
mounted inside of the glass bulb through a hole.
20w halogen and transparent cable were used.
halogen is a very strong light. kazuhiro hung 9 of the bulbs
and the space was somehow bright.

another good idea

‘spray’, unreleased
‘my ‘final’ dream is to create a illuminated air.
it should be in a spray can. you can spray anywhere,
anytime you want.
the spray cans may have several variations of brightness.
20W for to sleep, 100W for reading etc...
also another one could make a darkness, if you want to take
a lunch time nap, you could simply spray to create a dark space.
I have spoken with a scientist and found out that this is
a ‘not impossible’ project.
I hope I can realize this in my life time...’
says kazuhiro.

‘fly me to the moon’, 2003
a helium-filled balloon glows by LED’s from the inside.
‘a pair of such balloons in the trees at a garden party,
that would certainly look quite nice’, kazuhiro says.
he showed it first at the milan salone satellite,

‘rainy day’, 2003
there is no end to the fascination and play with the wheel.
in this case the wheel is a lamp.
a nomadic lamp, easy to move.
it can be put on the floor, on the wall, on a table.
by putting one on top of another, you can make a
column of light!
‘rainy day’ is supplied with a wall plug in steel painted
silver, and an 8 metre long power supply cable
(which winds around the lamp).
the lamp ‘shade’ itself is practical and strong,
because it is made from polyethylene,
moulded using the rotational system,
in the colours of translucent white and translucent acid yellow.
the external diameter is 50 cm, thickness 10 cm.
40W, T8 circular fluorescent light bulb.

and selected for the 2003 issue of the
designboom/dupont perpetual design calendar

it has been taken into production in 2004,
manufactured by pallucco italia.

‘as long as I'm dreaming’, 2002
‘the form of the light bulb is the very essence of light
itself. but it is the space between objects, rather than
form, that inspired this work.
in my dream, light is floating in the air without any
cables or supports, beautifully free from gravity.
the outline of the bulb is drawn in the air with a single
length of optical fibre, which has been sandblasted
to release the light along its whole length.’
says kazuhiro.
the effect in darkness is like an image burnt onto the
retina, the memory of a bright object glimpsed and then
seen again in the blink of an eye.

designboom featured kazuhiro’s installation at the
salone satellite in 2002

the same year he was requested to adapt his design for a
window installation at the‘colette’ shop in paris.
‘I wanted to make the lighting installation as a gift for
parisian people, who passed by at night. it was perfect place.
after I finished mounting the lights I saw a dog stopping in
front of the window looking at my lights.
how fantastic!' says kazuhiro.

with ‘as long as I’m dreaming’ kazuhiro yamanaka took part
of the lighting exhibition called, ’brilliant’, which was held
at the victoria and albert museum in london from
february 2004 for 2 months.
‘I hope I can share my dream with people, who see the
installation’ was his comment.

'how slow the wind', 2001
the illuminated chair is the core object of a series of
early designs by kazuhiro yamanaka.
at that time he was concentrating on the poetry
of hybrid furniture, and the relationship of objects
within interiors . shown first at milan’s salone satellite,
designboom featured the exhibition
