hampden gurney school - bdp architects bdp was founded in 1961, provides a consultancy service for most types of work within the built environment. they are famous for a diverse range of buildings such as wimbledon's number 1 court and the royal opera house. http://www.bdp.co.uk opened in january 2002 replacing a one and two storey post-war building. it uses the concept of a 'vertical school' to provide six levels of teaching, sport, worship and play for 240 primary-school children. the classrooms are set on three levels above a ground floor nursery, and children 'move up' the school. the building located on the prominent southwest corner of edgware roadforms a courtyard with two new interrelated residential buildings that restore the original streetlines. a tensile roof springs from the steel truss, protecting the lightwell below and creating sheltered work spaces in the rooftop 'technology garden'. hampden gurney school shortlisted for RIBA stirling prize. more affordable housing : --- michael aukett architects tesco/notting hill housing trust --- --- and hayworth tompkins iroko, london SE1 --- --- back to the main page --- ------- monthly designboom newsletter ------- ------- ? comments and contact us ? -------	roof top wayne hemingway the tour goes on ...
