![]() denis santachiara a small ceramic column upon which a jar/carafe is rested, containing neon lights, lit whitout using any wiring. the neon lights always stays on, both when the jar is moved or handheld. awal fitted glass shelf alights any neon light put in its vicinity. these lamps are a tribute to nikola tesla, a designer and a visual visionary scientist he was born in smilijan, croatia 1856 and died in new york in 1943, where he spent his late years in isolation. his numerous inventions include: created of polyphase alternating current; he patented the first synchronized induction activated electrical engines, biphase and triphase, the first cathode tube; he was a pioneer in radio phonic experiments. in 1912, he was awarded a nobel prize, only to turn it down, as he believed to have deserved it in 1909. he created a prototype for an electronic microscope before electrons were discovered, consisting of luminescent tube producing x-rays with which we would photograph the bones of his hands under wireless fluorescent lights. 'magnificent, a wonderful vision, a tremendous display, glorious, so marvellous that somebody might be scared to talk about it.' with childish astonishment, tesla was way ahead of time, nonchalant toward the laws of production and power. it is not the scientific genius of nikola tesla that captures me, it is infact, the visionary methodical plans, he would use to approach very intricate scientific matters, and also the amazement, he would manifest in the face of the results of his own work. his experiments were real electro visual performances, they would generate strong emotions and a feeling of alienation; a personal fight against the identity and the identification 'they observe with pleasure that I could visualize with great ease, I did not need any model, drawing or experiment, I could depict them all in my head as if they were real..... tesla does not like to leave anything behind but tesla.....and philosophically, very lonely characters, forced to think for themselves.' his great aspiration was to transmit free, wireless electricity to every home. his astonishment consisted not in fascination but everyday which he would transform the ordinary into extraordinary. text by denis santachiara --- |
