grand hotel salone
---
international architects and their projects for hotel rooms -

the exhibition was held during the milan design week 2002
staged by fondazione cosmit eventi
curator: adam d. tihany

'I can't stand those all-white hotel rooms anymore, because of this
each architect was assigned a city (other than his or her home base).
I wanted to make it an antiglobalization chain hotel', adam tihany said.
'each room had to represent what it is really like in a different city.'

the rooms on exhibit are remarkably different,
despite having standard hotel dimensions.

and here are the hotel rooms:
1 -
arata isozaki's vision of a hotel room in rome includes tatami mats
and a kimono on a display rack.

---

2 -
to conjure tokyo, jean nouvel, who was dressed head to toe in leather
pants, vest and jacket (I'm a little fat and short, so this is what I'm
comfortable in," he said), upholstered his entire room in black and red
leather, and tossed on a heap of red silk sheets.
he included also a bedside table made of a silver carbon fiber looks like
a set of steel photography cases, complete with foam-lined drawers
stocked with a bible and a condom.

---

3 -
richard meier stayed with the classic white statement for which he is
known, though he embellished his paris room with a big television screen
built directly into the footrest of the bed. in the middle of the room
there is a transparent circular shower.

---

4 -
ron arad placed a circular bed within a round room.
the walls are covered floor to ceiling with live-action video murals of
life in mexico city.

---

5)
toyo ito designed three-ring conversation pits for bed, desk and bath,
all surrounded by a white shag rug.
he designed the room after sept. 11 as an imaginary refuge for
new yorkers.

---

6 -
gaetano pesce and his room for moscow.
resin furniture and cutout profiles of human heads.
a clamorous place in transition:
gold silk pillows shaped like onions (russian orthodox church domes)
and the floor is painted with tiny red hammers and sickles.
a bedspread printed with a map of moscow.

---

7 -
vico magistretti and his comfortable hotel room in london.
no excess, but a simple and elegant atmosphere.

---

8 -
matteo thun
homage to hong kong in a bamboo screen.
to dream of a place and to give material substance to the dream.

---

9 -
zaha hadid and sidney
a multi-user / multi-space structure.
it is not a design driven by the location but by the lack of division
of functional spaces.
