'exercises in another material' by ettore sottsass for corian
an exhibition of 14 abstract architectural forms celebrating colour, light and shape.
only seen once in the world before, the exhibition attracted worldwide acclaim
when it was shown at an exclusive event at chicago’s museum of contemporary art last summer.
'for me, to design is to search for a sort of equilibrium between tradition and the future,'
says sottsass. 'this project shows how an innovative, modern material can create forms
that transcend time. It challenges the way we ‘pigeonhole’ materials for certain purposes.'
as visitors to the exhibition walk through the series of 2.5 metre high abstract sculptures,
they will see elements reminiscent of architectural forms - columns, screens, parapets and walls.
but where they might expect to see traditional stone or marble, they will see corian® surfaces
used in conjunction with chrome, wood or acrylic.
sottsass comments: 'I think of colours like words. as there are vocabularies of words,
so we can imagine that there are vocabularies of colours. we use words to write telegrams,
or poetry, or novels. we can do the same thing with colours. for me, colours not only relate to form,
but can communicate something of life and existence.
with them, you can paint or design an environment like a novel – or, if you want, you can make a statement.'
