karawanserei, the happy life on the road ...
the motto of this mobile exhibition on interior design and living culture.
how will our everyday living and working environment change,
especially with regards to our ever increasing mobility?
to take many different current aspects into account and ensure that the
theme is treated exhaustively, the exhibition was preceded by a design contest.
to highlight the mobility theme, the whole exhibition is going on tour through
germany, italy and switzerland.

the contest
the task of the contest was intentionally put close to everyday life:
«imagine you are working on a one-year project which will require
you to live and work in several european countries and companies.
in order to concentrate on your work, you decide to avoid hotels.
instead, you design your living and working quarters inside three
20 foot containers (6x2,5 metres)».
although this may simply sound spectacular at first view, it defines a
serious and realistic design task. you have three spaces of twelve
square metres each at your disposal. you need to weigh your needs
and requirements carefully to make optimal use of them.
ten designers were asked for submissions,
the final choice fell on werner aisslinger, berlin.

to highlight the mobility aspect, a truly mobile museum was constructed
in three containers.
an external staircase and a roof were added to create a building fitting
onto the space of two parked cars. this means that the museum can be
placed at any inner city location.
all official building requirements for mobile constructions are fulfilled.
furthermore, the museum is equipped with a floor heating system and
burglar and fire alarms.
disassembled, it fits into four containers, ready for shipping anywhere
worldwide. the museum measurements are 7 metres long, 4,6 metres wide,
and 9,5 metres high.
it fits into the space of two parked cars. the exhibitor must provide a
380 V electical power connection.
