'plateau of humankind'

la biennale di venezia / 49th exhibition of art in venice

inside the italian pavilion:
in the main space of the italian pavilion a 'platform
of thought' is erected: the sculpture 'le penseur' of
auguste rodin is surrounded by several works from
african artists, by naiv sculptures, by indian and
by chinese sculptures.

the first biennale of the new millenium exhibits
'plateau of humankind' -
it allows and suggests a look back on the 20th century.
no thematic criterion decided the selections of the artist.
the starting point is the positive, utopian spirituality of beuys.
three of his works are exposed, not at the beginning of the
exhibition in the padiglione d'italia but in the arsenale.
further important artists on show: cy twombly, who
revitalizes the grand narration of the ancient myths and dramas,
gerd richter and his red paintings for the cathedral of padre pio,
but refused by the vatican,
marisa merz with her delicate little heads,
bill viola, jeff wall,...
the exhibition continues in the rooms at the arsenale
and ends with two huge installations by richard serra.
