santiago sierra (madrid, 1966)
spanish artist santiago sierra was seeking 200 persons
originating from africa, asia or eastern europe with dark hair
(black or chestnut) to take part in an ‘action’ that took place
on 6th June, the first day of the vernissage.
at the corderie in the Aarsenale sierra bleached the immigrants’ hair
to obtain a 'straw' effect and to invite the spectator to reflect upon
the ambiguity inherent in the concepts of identity and otherness
sierra intends highlighting the absurdity of all economic activities by
offering payment for the non-productive labour provided by the
immigrants.
