9th international architecture exhibition in venice, italy, 2004
kiesler prize

---
asymptote wins kiesler-prize.

among over a dozen nominations representing highly
distinctive positions from around the world, the jury
unanimously chose asymptote / hani rashid and lise ann
couturte as the recipients of the 4th austrian frederick
kiesler prize for architecture and the arts 2004.

it is precisely asymptote’s fluid approach to non- normative
space, their conjunction betwen the body and the experience
of a building that impressed the jury.

frederick (john) kiesler
was born 22.9.1890 in vienna, austria.
he was an architect, sculptor, painter, designer, set designer
and art historian.
kiesler was tireless in his pursuit of a radical new concept
for interior spaces; his dream was a polydimensional living
space, an organic continuum in which colour, form and light
- combined with magical and mythical themes - would create
a unique cosmos. he died in 1965 in new york.

the friedrich und lillian kiesler foundfation
in vienna, holds more than 3,000 sketches, drawings, plans
and paintings, in addition to over 1,000 photographs,
manuscripts, letters, documents, catalogues and books
related to kiesler’s projects from the 1920s to the 1960s.
its mission is to disseminate the work of frederick kiesler
to a greater public by means of exhibitions and symposia,
while making available its holdings for scholarly studies
and publications.
lilian kiesler studied arts in the '30s, though she rarely exhibited,
she created paintings and drawings of realistically rendered
flowers. in later life she also performed in theater pieces by
steve buscemi and robert wilson. when her husband died in 1965,
she gave his work and papers to harvard, yale and the
archives of american art. in '96, she set up the frederick and
lillian kiesler foundation. with rich holdings in this foundation it
has been possible to reconstruct kiesler's ideals of living and
his concept of modernity. lilian kiesler died July 25, 2001 in new york.
