9th international architecture exhibition in venice, italy, 2004 /
interbreeding fields

experimental architecture from taiwan
---
imagine climbing over a life-sized paddle-pop sculpture
squashed inside a big room of a small castle and you get
some idea of the experience of visiting 'interbreeding fields',
an installation by students of the taiwanese tainan
graduate school of architecture showing in venice
concurrently to this year's biennale.
---
built entirely from raw planks of timber and sprawling
over the interior surfaces, the experimental structure
appears almost as if it has grown, rather than been
constructed there.

the close fit was not one easily achieved. a 1:1 scale
model of the palazzo delle prigioni in venice was built
at the school in taiwan in order to have confidence
when testing various ideas. the entire final installation
was then constructed inside it, diassembled in units,
shipped and reassembled in the actual pallazo.
---
the biological name of the exhibition is the same
as the students' construction course run by
professor li h. lu for the last 4 years. he coined it based
on his thoughts on reproduction. in his own words -
'interbreeding' or 'colonising' refers to a life form entering
a new environment, whereas 'interfering' refers to
organisms developing in their own living environment.
philosophical thinking underpins the entire course.
for example - designing and realising a children's
adventure playground was classified as a
'colonising project'.
---
essentially the course gives students a basic, practical
building knowledge - they have built studios, a gallery,
their own construction workshop. however professor
lu's novel philosophy encourages practical and imaginative
reflection on how buildings can interact with people -
resulting in new ways to think about both building and buildings.

'the interbreeding field' requires involved visitor interaction.
climb through it in venice until the 7th november 2004.
