	great britain - ‘echo city’ venue: pavilion at giardini commissioner: emily campbell curator: jeremy till with ian anderson, ruth ben – tovim, tim etchells, hugo glenfinning, jim prevett, trish o’shea, martyn ware & sarah wigglesworth deputy commissioners: brendan griggs, catherine ince contribuors: hawkins brown, encounters, tim etchells, hugo glendinning, mecanoo, prevett and mcarthur, sauerbruch hutton, studio egret west, the designers republic, jeremy till and sarah wigglesworth, martyn ware & the illustrious company http://www.britishcouncil.org the exhibition is an ‘urban register’ describing the city of sheffield at a variety of scales from 1:1 to 1:10 million. the 1:1 room is an installation of found objects from a project in the inner-city neighbourhood of sharrow initiated by the art collective encounters; 1:100 features architectural projects by sauerbruch hutton, hawkins brown and studio egret west, and mecanoo; 1:10,000 is a literary and photographic journey written in the streets of sheffield by writer tim etchells and photographer hugo glendinning; and 1:10,000,000 is martyn ware’s soundscape projecting sheffield's relationship with the world at large. the central exhibit is an interactive model developed by jim prevett which invites visitors to reconfigure ‘urban elements’ at a variety of scales from the surrounding rooms. ‘1:1 more than just detail ’ view of the installation ‘1:1 more than just detail ’ by ruth ben-tovim, trish o’shea and jim prevett open drawers 're-presents' a project created over the past three years in sharrow, sheffield. hundereds of people visited the shops, each person left something on display slowly building up the installation... this process continues in venice allowing visitors to add to the piece. ‘1:100 one architect to one hundered citizens’ views of the installation ‘1:100 one architect to one hundered citizens’ ‘1:10, 000 - these are stories not streets’ view of the entrance to the great britain pavillion, showing works from the ‘1:10,000 installation’. ‘1:10, 000 - these are stories not streets’ by tim etchells and hugo glendinning. ‘on a certain day in a certain month in a certain year between certain times in the day, a certain route was walked in the north of england, all guided by a certain phrase: ’the true meaning of something lies in its use the evidence of this mapped, indexed, organised by some system is already doomed to fail; it cannot make it present. on the other hand something of ambiguous substance remains and can be glimpsed. images from the installation ‘1:10,000’ ‘1:10,000,000 - here there and north of nowehere™’ ‘1:10,000,000 is martyn ware’s soundscape projecting sheffield's relationship with the world at large. a soundscape and animation presents the city as both magnet and dispora of people, stuff, sounds and virtual connections. thirty years agao this display would have been rather repetitive (lots of steel industry statistics) but the post-industrial reach of this city is now vast. somone in the vatican (a slightly deranged cardinal maybe) visits the sheffield-wednesday football club 77 times a year. yorkshire riflemen, pining for the taste of home, make basra, iraq one of the major export markets for hendersons relish as sheffield delicacy. the exhaustion of the tracks made by the artic monkeys as the cris cross the world ‘1:10,000,000 - here there and north of nowehere™’ see snippet of film ‘all scales’ ‘all scales’ objects are related to the other installations in the pavillion and as the user interacts with the objects they are shown amongst them onscreen. mixing the spatial reality through confusion of scales and the doubling of virtual with real space the central installation ‘all scales’ by prevett and mcarthur --- INDEX PAGE --- ------- monthly designboom newsletter ------- ------- ? comments and contact us ? -------
