the sprawl surrounding ireland’s urban centers is driven
by its obsession with the car and an innate desire to live
on the land. a mono-functional organism, sprawl has become
a universal solution to housing throughout the island;
reinforced by a lack of infrastructure, co-ordinated planning,
regulation and political will.

according to eurostat, ireland has the sixth lowest population
density in the EU but this is projected to increase by 25%
in the next 25 years. considering the road-based infrastructure
and the desire to live in low density housing, the challenge is
how to evolve new living conditions that are a hybrid of the
best aspects of both rural and urban. therefore new models
are developmed that will be environmentally, socially and
culturally sustainable.

de paor architects, ODOS architects, dominic stevens architects,
henchion + reuter, macgabhann architects and heneghan.peng.architects
created scenarios that would illuminate a vision of how the sub urban
might evolve into the super rural between now and 2030.
