apple has received a patent from the USPTO for an electronic wristband, which is presumably for the brand’s highly awaited smartwatch. the new patent, which refers to a bluetooth-powered device known as ‘iTime’, is described to boast a built-in media player, smart strap with sensors and multiple antennas such as NFC, or GPS. the smart device will also comprise a central unit with ‘receptacle area’ configured to receive and electrically connect to mobile electronics such as tablets, smartphones and even laptops.

like the modular phonebloks concept by dave hakkens, the ‘iTime’ would be capable of adding and replacing features to the central component, such as external GPS modules, Wi-Fi radios and haptic feedback motors for vibration notifications. fitted with an accelerometer, the device could also theoretically be controlled via gestural controls, allowing users to answer phone calls with the flick of their wrist for instance.

according to the patent description, the ‘iTime’ can ‘extend input/output of a portable electronic device by providing visual indicators, display, audio, tactile, haptics, buttons, switches, detectors, touch pads, navigation pads, joysticks, keys, etc. additionally or alternatively, the electronic components can be associated with one or more sensors, such as accelerometers, location (e.g GPS), proximity, biometric, force and/or the like that extend the capabilities of the electronic wristband or its associated portable electronic device. the electronic components as described herein can also include electronic subassemblies which are a multi-part electronic component. examples of multi-part electronic components include an electronic circuit, integrated circuit, or substrate (e.g printed circuit board, flex circuit).’
