‘reef’ created by atoll is a system of swappable smart modules designed to connect directly onto the iPad. the ‘smart cover’ is a structural frame that protects the electronic device, while also containing a set of integrated components. it allow users to swap out the modules according to their needs – an extra battery for a long off-the-grid weekend, a powerful speaker to play a game, as well as a second phone for international travel. the pieces are all interchangeable and can be swapped without the need for tools in just a few seconds.

each item is independently powered, so that the iPad battery doesn’t need to be drained. the reef collection serves as an open hardware platform that can be added to within the standard case specifications. the project provides common features such as a speaker and battery, but as it grows more specialized pieces for medical applications and engineering sensors can be developed.
