wireless charging hasn’t flourished as a reliable technique because the technology is still lagging to its full possible potential. the well know ‘Qi’ interface — pronounced ‘chee’ comes from the chinese word ‘natural energy’, is an open standard that is recognized by hundreds of companies across the globe. the base contains a power transmitter that consists of a electric coil that generates an oscillating magnetic field which induces alternating current over to a mobile device with a receiving coil that collects the current and charges the onboard battery. aukey’s ‘luna’ wireless charger is a very slim version of the bulky base chargers that are ready on the market.

the aukey luna allows the smartphone to be positioned in multiple ways

to stand out, the ’luna’ base has 3 coils across a much larger surface area that speeds up the more efficient charging process. its slender – 1.2 cm (0.47 inches) circular shape, is wrapped in polished glass and brushed metallic alloy. to keep it at a 75 degree angle, the aukey luna incorporates a zinc alloy stand that also acts as a phone prop, where the device can be positioned in many different ways. powered by a USB cable the charger comes in two colors, silver and gold, and weighs only 0.26 kilograms. to extend the ‘luna’s’ functionality, aukey offers a free downloadable app with modes for playing movies, controlling music, and telling time while the smartphone is still charging. unfortunately many mobile devices don’t have the ‘Qi’ receiver yet, so the $129 US base is dependent on a compatible smartphone to charge. check out designboom’s coverage of other wireless charging technology here.
