two former google glass engineers have teamed up to create ‘gate’, a smart lock which they have managed to cram a whole host of features into. with ‘gate’, people can lock and unlock doors for trusted individuals from anywhere, anytime. it features a keypad lock, a motion activated camera, and a call button — all on top of a traditional deadbolt.

gate enhances deadbolt lock capabilities with smartphone connectivity; a motion detection 720p camera; built-in speaker and microphone; and LED-lit key code options, it is aiming to be the all-in-one ‘smart lock’. it sends mobile notifications at the moment it detects motion in front of a door, or when somebody presses its call button. if you answer the notification and open the gate door app, you will be able to see, hear and speak to your visitor from your mobile device. the visitor at your door can hear and talk to you with ‘gate’s’ built in speaker and microphone. the device connects directly to the home’s wifi network and sends live video to mobile devices over wifi and 4G cellular networks. users can lock and unlock doors remotely, plus assign temporary or permanent pass codes to visitors.

founding member and CEO of gate labs, ehsan saeedi, was tired of having to stay at home just to receive his packages or let service people into his home. after bringing this up with colleagues, he learned that they shared similar frustrations about this inconvenience. they were not happy with the available solutions in the market as they all required multiple components to be installed on the entryway. ehsan; harvey; and; danial took the decision to quit their jobs at google and qualcomm and formed the gate smart lock to build a solution to their home access management problem. gate’s founding members applied their combined knowledge and experience towards solving this common problem. after two years of prototyping, gate teamed up with the award-winning design firm box clever to create a product that is not only functionally robust, but  beautifully designed as well.

the two-year-old technology startup also says that it’s working alongside delivery companies to offer a service that could feature the photo and name of a delivery person–so users can cross check when someone shows up at the door unexpectedly with a box. the company also plans to integrate the amazon echo bluetooth speaker with the product . ‘gate’ has already surpassed the funding target for its indiegogo campaign, which can be viewed here.
