created by shree nayar, a professor of computer science at columbia university, the ‘bigshot’ DIY 3D digital camera kit is designed as a low-cost photography set for self-assembly. ideal for those interested in learning and understanding the behind-the-scenes tech, the device makes imaging equipment accessible to everyone. equipped with a hand-crank to power the included lithium polymer rechargable battery, the ‘bigshot’ boasts a 3 megapixel sensor and is capable of shooting in 3D. additional panoramic lens settings provide a field of view from 16-80 degrees, depending on user preference. an LCD screen allows one to view their photos on-the-go like any typical point-and-shoot, and includes USB connectivity for easy uploading and sharing. while assembling the kit, users can follow the descriptions, illustrations and demonstrations on the designated website to learn fundamental concepts in optics, mechanics, electromagnetism, electronics and image processing.
