presented at the IFA 2014 in berlin, the LG ‘G watch R’ smartwatch features a 1.3 inch circular plastic OLED display that utilizes 100 percent of its face. this enables high quality and clear images under bright sunlight as well as from any angle. the timepiece is reminiscent of traditional ones thanks to its refined, elegant aesthetics and the strong circular stainless steel frame. the android wearable device is powered by a 1.2 GHz snap dragon processor which can run all compatible apps available from the google play store and the suite of LG health and fitness applications. the wristwatch can also monitor the user’s heart rate by using a built-in photoplethysmography sensor that aids its these functions.

the chronometer has an ingress protection rating of IP67 that enables it to run for up to 30 minutes in one meter of water. as well, it offers 4GB of storage, 512 MB of RAM and has a durable 410mAh battery which all help to provide smart notifications to remind the user about missed calls, messages, upcoming meetings, events and local weather forecasts. the smart-watch’s interface is interchangeable to an array of designs, with a simple touch of the display, and the 22mm calf skin leather strap is also customizable.

‘what we’ve noticed in the year of the wearable is that this is a category that can’t be compared to smartphones and tablets,’ said dr. jong-seok park, president and CEO of the LG electronics mobile communications company. ‘wearables are also accessories and consumers will want more than one to choose from. so we wanted to complement the modern design of the original G watch with the classic look of the G watch R. customers can’t go wrong with either device.’  the smartwatch is being displayed at berlin’s IFA 2014 from the 5th-10th september and will be available from shops in the fourth quarter of this year.

in other smartwatch news, samsung has launched their ‘gear S‘ smart device which continues the company’s ‘gear’ product design aesthetics rather than base it on traditional timepiece forms as LG have done. the ‘gear S’ features a curved display which fits the wearer’s wrist comfortably and allows them to view the screen easily at a quick glance.
