fiat group automobiles S.p.A. have announced the signing of the final agreement with mazda for producing an open-top two-seater sports car for alfa-romeo at its hiroshima plant starting in 2015.

originally debuting at the 2010 geneva auto show, the alfa-romeo 2uettottanta concept (as shown), was introduced as an 80 year celebration of pininfarina’s designs, foreshadowing a collaboration between both japanese and italian manufacturers. the new roadster however, will take styling cues from the iconic alfa romeo duetto and will be based on the architecture of the next generation mazda MX-5. the agreement foresees for both companies to develop two differentiated, distinctly styled, rear wheel drive vehicles, each to be powered by specific proprietary engines unique to their brands. rumor has it thatthe offering will be powered by a turbocharged and direct-injected 1,750-liter four-cylinder engine capable of producingup-to 250 horsepower.
