designboom was recently invited to maranello, to drive the 2013 ferrari FF (otherwise known as the ferrari four); the first ever prancing horse with four-wheel drive and four comfortable seats. originally unveiled at the 81st geneva international motor show, the FF presents a completely new take on the GT sports car with a unique shooting brake design that fuses extreme sports car performance with the versatility and usability of a spacious family vehicle. in this three part series, designboom will cover an overview of the FF with a behind the scenes look into the manufacturing process and an exclusive visit to ferrari’s tailor made division.

the FF presents a completely new take on GT sports cars

styled by pininfarina, the FF is the first V12 ferrari to boast a rear-mounted seven-speed F1 dual-clutch gearbox, unleashing 651 horsepower and 504 lb-ft. of torque from its direct-injected 6.3-liter engine. conceived as a replacement for the 612 scaglietti, the FF launches from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 11 seconds before maxing out at a top speed of 335 km/h.

in addition of being capable of handling snow and extreme road conditions, the FF provides exceptional performance on various terrains – both wet or dry – with very low grip coefficients, thanks to ferrari’s 4RM four-wheel drive system. the clever engineering development still delivers torque to the rear, but in cases of loss of traction, the PTU (power transfer unit) sends up to 30% of power to the front wheels. the addition of dynamic vehicle controls such as an ‘E-diff’, ‘F1-trac’ and PTU have all been integrated into a single CPU which intelligently distributes torque to each of the four wheels individually.

with the exterior constructed almost entirely out of aluminum and a host of other components, the interior of the FF has also been optimized through the use of high-tech materials such as magnesium for the seats. the spacious cabin configuration – both front and back – comfortably accommodates four full sized adults with extra room to spare, and is outfitted with high-end poltrona frau aniline leathers specially treated to enhance their natural softness.

450 liters of trunk space can also be extended to 800 liters when the rear seats fold down, providing room for sporting equipment such as golf clubs, luggage and even a full-sized bicycle. additional interior features include a garmin navigation system and rear-seat infotainment with two screens for watching television and movies, paired with a high-performance 1,280 watt, 16-channel stereo system with quantumlogic surround sound.
