the ‘twikao‘ app for iPhone automatically transforms facial expressions into emoticons, by simply taking a photo of the user. the emoticon, with or without the picture, can then be instantly tweeted.

‘kaomoji’ refers to the complex, upright emoticons commonly invented and used by japanese youth. ‘twikao’ translates particular facial features into characters, collectively forming an emoticon whose expression mimics that of the user.

the app is available for free in english and japanese at the iTunes store.
