turner prize shortlist 2010
the four shortlisted artists of the turner prize 2010 have been announced by the tate.
this year's jury is composed of:
isabel carlos, director of the centre for modern art, centre de arte moderna
philip hensher, novelist and art critic
andrea nairne, executive director, arts strategy, arts council england
polly staple, director of chisenhale gallery
from the nominees they have selected the following shortlist:
angela de la cruz, painter
dexter dalwood, painter
otolith group (anjalika sagar and kodwo eshun), film artists
susan philipsz, sound artist
work by the four finalists is set to go on display at the tate britain on october 4th, 2010
and the winner will be announced on december 6th, 2010.
the 2009 turner prize was awarded to painter richard wright.

painter dexter dalwood was born in bristol, england in 1960.
his work considers real history with art history, expressed through distinctive painterly elements
or devices borrowed from other artists. dalwood's process begins with drawings and collages
which are pulled from print images, mixed with references to art history as well as
contemporary culture and political events.

the otolith group was founded in 2000, by anjalika sagar and kodwo eshun.
working collaboratively primarily through the medium of video / film - the moving image,
in which they explore histories of futurity, the legacies of non-alignment
and tricontinentalism through archival and documentary material.

angela de la cruz was born in la coruna, spain in 1965.
she works between the mediums of painting and sculpture. questioning the status of painting,
her artistic practice visualizes monochromes and minimalist abstract works physically disrupted being,
broken, torn, folded and removed from their stretches, employing and subverting the artistic language
of modernism.

susan philipsz
I see a darkness, 2008

sound artist susan philipsz was born in glasgow, scotland in 1965.
her artistic practice deals with the spatial properties of sound, looking at the values related
to space and how sound can define architecture. drawing on popular literature and music,
philipsz engages her audience in an experience which moves
between the realms of
public and private, investing the psychological effects of song and how is can evoke
immediate emotions, creating nostalgic shifts, emphasizing the listener's spatial perception
of the self.
