australian artist peter hennessey's bold and intricately constructed large scale sculptures
and multimedia works are imbued with both symbolic intensity and a sense of familiarity.

born from his fascination with scientific phenomena and popularised media generated events,
'my hubble' (the universe turned in on itself) debuts in the turbine hall of cockatoo island as
part of the biennale of sydney 2010. it is a life size re-enactment of the hubble space telescope
- a space based observatory that has revolutionised astronomy by providing deep and clear
views of the universe. with the aim of giving the viewer a physical experience of the object,
it is constructed from lasercut plywood and steel and simultaneously enacts the scale and detail
of the original. in this instance the telescopic function is reversed and visitors are encouraged to
play with,  modify and create their own mini universes on the ground, which are then reflected
by the telescope into the heavens.

when creating his work hennessey looked at 7 different images of the hubble. rather than using
3D software to model individual parts as one might expect, he used adobe illustrator. the whole
process took about 3 months - in which 6 weeks were dedicated to laser cutting individual parts
and building them into sections and the rest of the time was dedicated to assembling 'my hubble'
on the island.

Great! I like it.
Giacomo Cornelio   06.04.10
why? what is it with this post-post-post-post-...-post modernistic "contemporary art"? thank you god it isn't made of shit.
lsdforkids   06.04.10
THE COOL THING IS THAT SINCE THE ARTIST HAS THE PLANS FOR THIS THING IN ILLUSTRATOR, IT COULD BE EASILY TRANSFORMED INTO A PAPERCRAFT PROJECT.
TERBREUGGHEN   06.05.10
I love it. As someone who works with wood, I can appreciate the effort gone into putting this together. Nice work.

I like how the dish is accurate even down to the slit from opening up....Beautiful!
just me   06.08.10
I love it, it's very cool, but the article is missing the one thing I was looking for. Why? What makes a person wake up one morning and say, "yep gonna build a life sized replica of the Hubble"
BAD   06.08.10
@BAD: yepp. Cool. But why?
Suecia   06.08.10
@ BAD and Seucia - The article states 'born out of his fascination of scientifica phenomena',
hence that's WHY he wanted to make it.
Andrew   06.09.10
Why? Because it looks cool, and makes me think. And the more you look at the details and the many decisions he had to make, the better sense you get of what he thinks and how he feels about the originals. It's not by chance that the satellites etc are windows we've built to expose the cosmos and the origin of the world. They're immense compared to us but tiny compared to the stars, planets, and vast cosmic distances. These sculptures goose my sense of wonder.

¡GENIO!

Nerd and a laser cutter.

@lsdforkids That would be your projection, would it? Maybe he doesn't think the way you do
