damien hirst designs audi AI for charity

audi AI designed by damien hirst

british artist damien hirst designed an audi AI for sir elton john's AIDS foundation (EJAF)
white tie and tiara ball, which the musician and his partner david furnish host each year
at their old windsor residence. german auto company audi sponsored the car for the auction,
making it the eighth consecutive year that the company has supported the AIDS charity event.
this year, hirst's AI was auctioned off for 420 000 euros.

'that’s the most exciting object we’ve ever had on auction at the white tie. damien hirst
is considered one of great britain’s most important modern artists, and his works have earned
record sums at sotheby’s
.' - sir elton john

hirst spin painted the completely drivable glossy candyfloss pink A1 in his studio in
gloucestershire, england, specifically for the white tie and tiara auction. the car was auctioned
together with a 1.80-meter high spin painting on canvas, which hirst created at the same time.

the audi A1 is so new that it will not be available on UK roads until november 2010.
hirst's special artwork was created in advance of the car's mainland european release dates.
the car is an example of the compact hatchback produced in close collaboration with audi AG
in germany, which has been engineering the production for more than six months.
the A1 design by damien hirst is the most exclusive donation that audi has ever made.

Hirst should have cut it in two, one half for Elton and the other for his BF :)

In general I like car art, but given the history of BMW in this field, this seems to me like copy-cat behavior. The fact that it is for a good cause is not solving that feeling.

What is it with this guy? his only leitmotiv is to be the most expensive artist in the market dispite of the actual quality of his work. I can't believe Sir Elton John could fall for it after the dimond skull scam. Too bad this things aren't legally regulated.

Hirst is so hit and miss, mostly miss. This is just plain stupid. Spin painting? Even in the realm of car art, this is fraudulent. What's supposed to be droll and amusing of course is that, naturally, it is deliberately fraudulent. It is making fun of itself, and you, and the art market. It is even making fun of money, all the while raking it in! Isn't that an excellent definition of a con artist? A seller something worthless to the bedazzled for heaps of lucre? You'd think Sir Elton would know better.

This is perhaps Audi's way of penetrating the alternative market with a homologation special? Was the designer's work limited to outward appearance, or is that back door wide open because he's redesigned it for much easier entry?
Agree with Frank, this is BMW's thing, they do/did it better. Audi should find it's own expression.

It's all brand positioning, no matter what the brand. Why should this particular gimmick be exclusive to BMW? And what makes this car any better than the Koons car? Because Hirst is no longer the art world darling he used to be? Trite, albeit historical, concept and reactionary, fickle masses.
