silicon art using woven optical fiber

japanese artist shoichiro matsuoka’s silicon art pursues three-dimensional beauty by constituting optical fiber woven together simulating life like CG models.

the optical fiber is woven on semi-transparent silicon based molds using a traditional weaving technique from kyoto called ‘nishijin’. the optical fibers glow quietly in a subtle manner, pulsing vibrantly and appearing to connote respiration.

born in 1968, shoichiro matsuoka is a special effects make-up artist who has worked in a variety of fields, movies, graphics and the fashion industry to name a few. he studied applied photography at tokyo polytechnic university. in 2001, matsuoka presented his work on silicon optical fiber at the bvlgari brilliant dream awards. three years later, he designed a a special costume worn by ayumi hamasaki in an advertisement for panasonic which was later used as a window display at galeries lafayette in paris. he held his first exhibition in 2009 where he presented his original artwork.
