building transportation was a key concern leading up to the world cup in south africa. in cape town,
the city developed an integrated rapid transit system that features work by local artists in each of the
stations. the system made public art a priority in an effort to encourage more people to use public
transportation. designboom recently visited the station outside the new stadium in green point, which
features the work of lovell friedman, a local cape town ceramic artist. the various mosaics are spread
around the station’s walkway and are based on the history of the area, its activities and the inhabitants.
lovell worked with a team of 20 craftspeople to complete the project in the lead up to the world cup.
these craftspeople were trained by lovell, who runs workshops teaching the local mosaic traditions.
work by other artists is featured in the other main IRT stations in cape town.
