juan james: 'burka board' + 'prayer board'

'prayer board' + 'burka board'
working under the pseudonym 'juan james', chilean-born new york-based artist and designer
sebastian errazuriz has collaborated with NYC artist and musician j. carlton dewoody to create
two limited edition skateboards - 'burka board' and 'prayer board' - to be exhibited and auctioned
for skateistan.
skateistan is afghanistan's first skateboarding school, which engages growing numbers of urban
and internally-displaced youth in afghanistan through skateboarding. it is the only organization
which provides girls in afghanistan with the opportunity to play sports. the platform provides youth
with new opportunities to thrive in cross-cultural interaction, education and personal empowerment
improving their quality of life. with 50 percent of the population under the age of 16, skateboarding
classes are a first starting point for a series of other recreational and educational activities.

'prayer board' detail
the exhibition and fundraising event will include more than 50 different customized boards
created by a series of artists designers and skateboarders.
the fundraiser is tonight, august 20th, 2010 from 9pm - 12am at the red bull space in soho NY.
tickets are 40 USD and you must RSVP here.

'burka board' detail

boarding

Minimal, clever and ironic.
Always manages to open a good discussion
I am not a Muslim but I immediately see this project as irreverent and a big cultural 'birdie' to those who practice Islam
Shoes tramping all over a prayer mat or the face of a burkha clad lady is a strong statement of a very negative kind. In fact that last one is not only religiously and culturally dumb it could be easily read as sexist too
Surely when raising money for a worthy charitable cause, no matter how ironic the designer may believe they are being, a Respect for those who will benefit form these boards being auctioned might not have been too much to ask?
Gosh, this posting has really annoyed me!
The irony of the design does come out as disrespectful of the Muslim culture, I think from that perspective the boards are negative and wrong.
Nevertheless skateboarding, graffiti and street culture in general has always defied the hierarchies and structures imposed by government or religions everywhere in the world.
Don't you think both boards are definitely defying in their own "street style" language 2 symbols of a religious and cultural structure that has also perpetrated countless negative actions?
Shouldn't the boards ironic-anarchic designs poke at the structures under which the Taliban has just prohibited young girls to go to school and receive an education in Afghanistan?
the grip cant be turn apart like that or else you will have a unskatable skate in your hands!..
and second: how obvious can u get when you are asked to mix Muslim religion and a Skateboard?? lol
Very naif obvious and short sided work for a so called "artist"
;-(
The Arabic word for a prayer rug is "sajada," which comes from the same root word (SJD) as "masjed" (mosque) and "sujud" (prostration).
skateboard benches
bangin' benches from broken boards, the furniture seating utilizes 100% reclaimed broken skateboards for its construction.
d*face at ridiculous skate pool
the human riders of five skateboards outfitted with spraypaint cans become the brushes in a pool painting project by d*face, carried out at the california skateboarding pool 'ridiculous'.
crank out handmade skateboards
the geometric graphic influences of the boards pull from drawings by M.C. escher, the penrose triangle and gestalt illusions, creating, besides the drawing, a composition of colors using different wood essences.
sebastian errazuriz: personal registration of
removing the hour and minute hands from a series of vintage watches has resulted in the first timepieces that don't actually tell time, but which allow you to just watch that it is passing.
sebastian errazuriz: outline chair
the designer 'rescu[es] the linear drawing of the basic iconic chair' by replacing the back and seating panes with transparent glass, drawing attention to the lines that define seating structures.
sebastian errazuriz: duck fan
'the duck's continuous silent resistance steals a smile and reminds the viewer that ducks fly against the wind every day.' -sebastian errazuriz
