the château de versailles is the location of the latest exhibition by japanese artist takashi murakami. the show is titled
‘murakami versailles’ and features a number of manga-inspired sculptures displayed both indoors and out at the
historic french palace. of the 22 works on display, 11 were created specifically for this show. all the murakami
works sit within the context of the palace, often contrasting sharply with the period décor and complimenting it
at other times. the show will run from now till december 12th as part of the regular versailles admission.

I am a fan of his work, but using Versailles as an exhibition place for this kind of work feels sinister.
Nevertheless, this is the essence of a col-lect-ion, putting works in a dialogue and in this perspective the result must be very interesting.
A perceptual challenge indeed.

for me it fits perfectly togehter.
east meets west...

What incredible garbage.
SWH   09.21.10
for me it doesn't correspond at all..as if it was a good idea, but when put to realization it didn't function and it didn't bring resault as it should..this means ANY kind of resault..for me, visually both the art of TM and versailles are beyond despute fascinating, but put them together you haven't got anything new...

a fucking GENIUSSSSSS!!!!!!!

I toured Europe last year and was constantly amazed by the number of historically/culturally unique sites that get hijacked for use as backdrops for 'modern art' of one form or another.
Why should there be giant 'egg people' littering the grounds of the Coloseum and Forum in Rome, or "architectural" sculptures in the gardens of the Piti Palace in Florence? As for the monstrosities that were in the gardens at Versailles this time last year, they really did spoil the famous view from the Palace of Light down through the gardens. The replacement doesn't look much better.

If these projects truely have intrinsic value they should not need to be displayed at these sites.

Is it really Juxtaposition, lazyness or simply contempt?

It is ok you don't get it.
Louis Zoellar Bickett II   09.22.10
I get it, I simply don't accept that it is valid.
Gerard Linstrom   09.23.10
@ gerard :

art is hijacking.
don't u think renaissance artists hijacked greeks and romans? how would you define tsara & co work if not hijacking?
the koons "monstrosities" u're referring to were also perfect hijacking of so called perfection which has never existed and is narrow-minded illusion.
there's no such things as "intrinsic value".
too much cartesianism is bad for your health!
try to let it go now & again. open up! :)
buzzoff   09.23.10
if you think of kitsch as over the top and openly appropriating baroque imagery, this fits perfectly, it is both over the top and blingy
Annie   09.23.10
where is art?
KICH KICH KICH EVERYWHERE!!!!!
lore   09.24.10
I DON'T LIKE THIS WORKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
c'est merde

I would have thought that the Louvre would have been a more appropriate setting for these "works". The contrast twixt the Versailles setting with these modernistic pieces doesn't do any favours to either d;-)
Jetwax   09.26.10
In the grand history of this building this is but a blip, a millisecond, so people should get over it. Yes I agree its really lazy to carry a show with its setting, but art is for decorate houses too. So enjoy it or not. This work is neither sublime or beautiul, but it is well executed and in propotion to the demensions of the room. Every one is correct, no body cares, shut up
