julien berthier: left handed rietveld chair

‘left handed rietveld chair’ by julien berthier, 2007 (laquered wood)

‘left handed rietveld chair’ is a series of chairs designed by  julien berthier based on left-handed drawings he made
of gerrit rietveld’s 1918 ‘red and blue chair’. each of the 5 identical copies were hand made by a professional
carpenter based on berthier’s left-handed attempts at sketching the famous chair.

I'm sure Julien was aware he would get criticized for why he would do this and that there is a "story" to answer it. However, using the red blue chair as done, shows there is a complete lack of understanding to what the chair by itself is. A very unappropriate application in my opinion, maybe he's just trying to cash in on the interest of anything Rietvelt this year.

you mean, OBVIOUSLY just cashing in on rietvelt year.

DO, I am with you all the way, this just seems utterly pointless. Fair comments from the others too... oh dear Julien what are we to do with you
dexterdragon   10.19.10
It doesn't have to have a point. It's just fun. It's making an abstract left-handed drawing into a tangible object. It is creating an object of interest by bringing focus to what we normally consider a set of ugly squiggly lines. I think it is awesome.

I wish more designers are so ironic with our masters
Helga   10.19.10
It's not ironic. It's pointless. I'm disappointed that designboom is resorting to posting utter rubish. There has been very little that you've posted in the last while that I've found interesting. I used to really look forward to your daily updates...

Beautiful... What a very cool idea.

Its irreverent, not ironic... but Is that really so bad?
