artist daniel arsham has just completed avalanche, his second collaboration with the merce cunningham dance company.
the play was run from december 2-4 at miami's arsht center with 6 performances featuring the artist’s unique stage
design. the play also featured costumes designed by robert rauschenberg, a previous artist collaborator with the merce
cunningham dance company. arsham’s stage design featured a set spread across three levels, where the audience literally
stands on stage with the dancers. the audience is forced to get this close to the performance because the seats in the
theatre are covered with a large geometric sculpture designed by arsham. the sculpture appeared to be exploded
outwards, as small white forms were also present in upper seating levels.
