chung joo hyun and hong sung do have curated a contemporary installation entitled ‘air and water’, a show that subliminally relates to the work of each man – hong, who developed the airbag and chung who is a car designer. divided into two parts, the temporary installation is thematically and abstractly based upon two very different components of the car.

miniature toy cars crash into ‘airbags’

using everyday objects such as cups, miniature cars and books, the air installation abstractly demonstrates the impact of a crash. over-blown, pillow-like forms hang on the walls and scatter around the otherwise blank space. a single, iconic object punctures each translucent ‘airbag’, contrasting both its form and material characteristics.

overall ‘air’ installation

the second installation – water – permanently captures the unpredictable shape of a car, revealed on the surface of water when the vehicle is submerged and sinking. the replicated foam pieces pierce through the wall, as if they, themselves are immersed inside of it, beginning to drown.
