an exhibition for the shortlist of photographers in the 2011 prix pictet
photography and sustainability competition will be held at the passage de retz
gallery in paris from march 17th to april 16th. the winner will be announced on
opening day and will be rewarded with 100,000 swiss francs and commissioned
to undertake a trip to kenya where pictet & cie is supporting the work of the tusk trust.
launched in 2008 by the geneva-based private bank pictet & cie, the prix pictet
has established itself as the world’s leading prize in photography and sustainability.
with the goal to uncover art of the highest order and apply it to confront the social and
environmental challenges of the modern age.
thematically centered around water, earth, and now growth, each year the photographs
"highlight the beauty of the earth we share. but they also expose the damage, deliberately
or carelessly, we are inflicting on our own environment. so these images are a celebration
and a reminder of the urgent need to change our ways." - kofi annan, the prix pictet honorary president.
the nominators for the competition are a group of leading experts in the visual arts from
around the world including directors of major museums and galleries as well as journalists
and critics. the jury for final selection of the winner consists of an internationally recognized
panel of experts that look for the photographs of the highest artistic quality and which best
contribute to public awareness of issues involving sustainability.
