‘so… I was at a party last night’ installation by andrea cuius and roland ellis for poet sabrina mahfouz’s solo show at the new wimbledon theatre

light and sound shift in response to one another in ‘so… I was at a party last night’, a light installation created by london-based programmer andrea cuius and designer roland ellis for poet sabrina mahfouz‘s solo show ‘dry ice’.

thirty tungsten lamps, of a variety of forms and each with an intricately shaped filament, are suspended from the ceiling, creating a luminous canopy. the brightness of each lamp is determined in realtime by a computer program fed data from an onstage microphone, and the lights brighten and dim in response to the changing frequencies and amplitudes of sound from the performance.

the artists state: ‘conversations and interactions form the stimulus for this reactive light installation. each point of light has a character, and together they form a dynamic canopy […], a luminous ceiling, such that the stories might be told from beneath the sheets or within an alcove.‘
