'excretorium,' a work by joep van lieshout of rotterdam-based design practice atelier van lieshout is currently on display at glasstress 2011,
a collateral event of the venice art biennale 2011. having gained
worldwide recognition for his mobile home installations,
the artist continuously confounds distinctions between design and art, structure and sculpture:
both themes of self-sufficiency and interdisciplinarity are reflected in this glass reconstruction of a waste system.
created specifically for this exhibition, the project was the artist's first time using glass.
the material was shaped into hollow and transparent shapes, connected with clay forms that were supported by tape as they solidified.
'I am always used to making my own sculptures, whether its steel or wood or fiberglass,' says van lieshout.
'this is the first time that you are not allowed to touch the material, or you don't have the skill to do something with the material,
so that's a very strange experience for me, but also very challenging.'

the focus of the show space was the 'gigantic blue cannon' surrounded by 12.5 years of design projects, including the newest furniture pieces that are a result of lensvelt and AVL's long standing collaboration.
atelier van lieshout: new tribal labyrinth
a presentation of 14 new works, by which the artist continues exploring recurring themes of work organization, power structures and autarky, implying the emergence of a new tribal administration.
joep van lieshout: tannhauser stage design
'the set itself doesn't look historical but is a large factory in which a new version of my technocrat installation is starring. we wanted to make one very dense continuous performance.' - joep van lieshout
jaime hayon: testa mecanica
translating from spanish as 'mechanical heads,' this trio of handblown glass sculptures resemble whimsical cartoon heads with industrial gear-like forms inside.
michael joo: expanded access
made from mirrored blown glass, this installation recreates velvet ropes that typically separate elite crowds from the rest, arranged in a maze-like formation but including an open point for entry.
kohei nawa: pixcell emu
emu is part of a larger series entitled 'pixcell' in which the artist utilizes glass beads to cover entire surfaces of objects, mostly taxidermied animals, giving them the vision of 'the cell of an image'.

sited in south milan, the design aims to generate a new gallery typology that speaks to the evolving nature and interpretations of art, fashion, design, technology and cinema.
federico diaz: outside itself
drawing from the notion of viral growth, this site-specific installation is mathematically programmed to respond to viewer's interactions, then self-replicate, morphing into a life form unto itself.
