slinkachu: house of god

london-based artist slinkachu is known for his 'little people project' which began in 2006, whereby he remodels and paints
miniature train set characters, arranging them in particular scenarios on the street, photographing them and leaving them
for passer-bys to stumble upon. the street art installation / photographic work is intended to encourage city-dwellers
to be more aware of their surroundings.

slinkachu's latest piece is 'house of god (application to the department of city planning - ref: 13-3470/C)' located in new york city.
the miniature installation is situated on a hydrant in which the artist has placed a crescent moon, a well-recognized symbol of the islam faith,
on the upper domed structure, as a means of referencing a mosque. at the base of the hydrant, a small sticker with the photo of an entrance
to a muslim place of worship, is accompanied by four figurines - three men and a woman - dressed in traditional attire.

this installation is a follow-up to slinkachu's 'house of god (application for planning permission – ref: 11/0282-D)'
which was exhibited earlier this year in his solo show 'concrete ocean' at andipa gallery, by which he altered a
pylon to also represent an islamic place of worship.

We have bought this book as a present for friends and relations about 10 times - we will have to buy another 10 I think - it is so entertaining....

why a hydrant?
the dome structure is can also refer to christian-orthodox in russia or the kopten in egypt.
in comparison to the other pictures of the little people, this piece don't comes well thinked.
(gum and street, the stone thrower on a bridge, police and bugs are logical in it's meaning, the mosue and the hydrant not)....or i am on the complete wrong path?

(sry for the english)

Oh, boy. I wouldn't be surprised if you had angry Muslims at your door.
Not that this possibility should be a reason not to do it - the contrary.

Does the fact that dogs usually pee on hydrants have anything to do with it?

Slinkachu...religion is a intimate stuff. In all religions holly temples are clean and respectfull places. Putting a symbolism of any religion on hydrant is making joke with the feelings of the beleivers of that faith. U may be atheist or something, but u dont have the right to make caricatures of someones inner feelings. For me this is far from art, but ok u'r the boss, comments and time would tell u, was this a win or failure. ( sorry for my english)

Im a muslim and i dont find this art offending at all. it is interesting he is using a fire hydrant to represent mosque, maybe he wants to say that mosques are everywhere in the west just like the fire hydrants. And the yellow pylon with a no parking sign looks like he is trying to say you cant find parking spots near a mosque, which is a common complain against building a mosque in countries like America and Canada. Regarding the dog's pee comment that can show how shallow some individuals perception can be of the world.

fire hydrants save people & save the city, that is peaceful message
syam   08.09.11
quite interesting and funny at first sight, mediocre by the second time and almost annoying more thsn two times...I am sorry.
about the fire hydrant , come on guys...no meanings, no metaphors and certainly no insults, it is only an analogy to represent a mosque dome.
peace.
