'we are here for a good time, not a long time.' - damien hirst

'beautiful sunflower' and 'beautiful fractional sunflower' panerai paintings by english artist damien hirst are made
with the technique of spin painting. dozens of watch components from florentine manufacturer officine panerai watches,
all strictly without hands, are assembled upon the canvas surfaces. within these two-dimensional works,
time is reduced to its circular quintessence, to its perpetual and unmeasurable motion. for hirst, the absence of hands is like
the death of kronos and the triumph of kairos.

both paintings are the protagonists in the exhibition 'o'clock. time design, design time' which opened today at the triennale di milano, italy.
curated by silvana annicchiarico and jan van rossem, with installation concept by spanish designer patricia urquiola,
the exhibition shows more than 70 'timepieces' that explore the concept of time in their work, chosen from existing collections
and commissioned specifically for the triennale.

stay tuned, an article presenting the entire exhibition will be featured on designboom shortly.

Kitsch beyond belief. If this was not by Damien Hirst no-one would take it seriously. Emperor's new clothes, I'm afraid. I've been wanting to say this for years.

Worse than kitsch -- poshlust, which means it's dangerous because some people will think it is art. Spin painting as a technique was interesting maybe a single time, as a one-off. It's really just cynical high-speed manufacturing for the masses. And the watch faces: Hirst loves round dots, circles of many kinds. No other explanation. They are not even helpful decoratively. Who sponsored this: Sherwin Williams? Dutch Boy? Benjamin Moore?

let's make a comparison. Like Picasso did a perfect art career, simply because he had kept challenging to his established painting until the last year of his life. So I really like to say Hirst has given up art career for a long long time.

Beth Worth housedesigngirl: I have seen the exhibition today, and the painting caught my eye immediately -
much before I knew that it is from Damien Hirst! however, I like it!

Amazing picture ............. Beautiful sunflower painting.

LAAAMME, it looks like first year student work. My 2-year old niece has a spin art toy.,

If this is on the concept of time, then it would have worked better arranging the watch dials like a spot painting and omitting the spinning.

@Andrew Liu not Lui

I doubt if there's any such thing as a 'perfect art career'. On occasion Picasso made some dreadful paintings - but its all subjective anyway.

Hirst is very often interesting, at least visually. His high profile means gets slagged off a lot and he's a lot to live up to. Such a high profile elicits a lot of jealousy from unsuccessful artists, like Zaha Hadid does from unsuccessful architects.
