satoshi hirose: winter garden
galleria maria grazia del prete, rome, italy
on now until march 24th, 2012

japanese artist satoshi hirose has created the sculptural work 'island: an existence of nine years' on show in the 'winter garden'
exhibition at galleria maria grazia del prete. the piece is formed from plastic-- a heap comprised of caps from the recyclable tops
of plastic bottles gathered by the artist over the course of nine years. the found-object island rests on a rectangular wooden platform
which has had a small nook cut into one of the two longer sides of its base; this undersized shelf contains an assemblage of golden beans.
the massive shape fills the center of the gallery space, inviting the viewer to interact with the piece by moving around it as he/she
contemplate the form resulting from the accumulation of insignificant everyday items over a great expanse of time.

I don\'t want to be unpleasen with the artist, but with this amount of bottle caps you could help a little spanish girl, who needs an operation in Boston and family and friends are keeping bottle caps and selling them in order to get the enough money for the surgery.

I like that the sculpture is a very literal representation of an individual's consumption during a certain amount of time. an interesting method to showcase the passage of time, I think.
@ ana Thanks for sharing that resource with us. I clicked on a picture of a recycled sculpture to not only learn about that work of art, but also be made aware of a very worthwhile fundraiser. Another great use for plastic caps!
