jeremy deller: sacrilege glasgow international festival of visual art, glasgow, scotland, UK on now until may 7th, 2012

artist jeremy deller has created an inflated stonehenge replica entitled ‘sacrilege’ for the glasgow international festival of visual art 2012 on the glasgow green. the full-scale representation of one of the world’s seven wonders is an interactive outdoor installation– a bouncy toy for visitors of the creative gathering. ‘sacrilege’ happens to be the first major public work in scotland and though the engaging piece was commissioned by glasgow’s art festival, the artist and festival committee plan to move the sculpture to various locations across the UK.

the instantly recognizable form has been created from a plastic and air system, employing the technology of the popular inflated children’s playhouses. towering gray pillars and archways seem to grow from the bright green floor of the bouncy structure’s floor. the to-scale recreation of the monument is positioned strategically by deller so that the air-filled version is identical in orientation to the original building.
