a retrospective exhibition of renowned japanese artist yayoi kusama opens at the whiney museum of american art in new york. known for producing beautifully dense dot patterns, forming large-scale environments which envelop the viewer within, kusama’s most recent two-dimensional works depict a slight change in her’s artistic direction, delicately cluttered and somewhat calmer while still maintaining her signature aesthetic. her first retrospective in new york in 15 years, the self-titled show offers an overview of pieces spanning the 60 years of her practice, featuring more than 300 works displayed over the entirety of the institution’s fourth floor including: two-and three-dimensional works, press clippings, photographs capturing moments from her younger years, as well as selection of exhibition posters. installed within the gallery’s main lobby is kusama’s ‘fireflies on the water’ from 2002, a work which is a part of whitney’s personal collection  which is being shown in conjunction with ‘yayoi kusama’.
